Nationally known motivational speaker Chris Norton will be headlining several engagements throughout northwest Iowa in the coming week.
On October 16, 2010, in Decorah, Iowa, Chris Norton was severely injured while making a tackle on a kickoff, fracturing his C3-C4 vertebrae. After being told he had a 3% chance of ever regaining movement below the neck, Chris has defied the odds every step of the way, demonstrating a faith and determination to overcome his circumstance that has inspired thousands.
Thanks to a partnership between the SCI CAN Foundation and the REALTOR® Foundation of Iowa, Chris will be traveling the state speaking to middle and high school students about the impact his injury had on his life.
Chris overcame the odds to collect his diploma from Luther College in Decorah by doing just what the doctors believed was impossible, and he continues to inspire audiences today with his message of hope and perseverance.
Chris’s story has been featured on Good Morning America, the TODAY Show, USA Today and many other national and local media outlets. The video below outlines his incredibly inspiring story.
Chris will be in the NWIA region speaking to students on the following dates. All REALTOR® members are invited to attend.

Uh oh. Once again, we’re seeing those crafty Internet scammers attempt to invade the Northwest Iowa real estate market. Several of our members are reporting their for sale listings are being scraped or copied, and then posted to websites as though they are legitimate properties for rent.
When it comes to light, this is quite an upsetting situation for the agent and the home seller. It’s also a huge frustration to the unsuspecting individual who has often mailed or wired money with the belief that they’ve secured a rental property. Not only do they discover they’ve been duped, but there’s generally no way to recoup their lost funds.
Of course it’s not easy to monitor every website at every hour of every single day and as an agent you have many responsibilities. That’s where technology comes in. In this case, it might just be your best friend! Just a few simple technology settings and alerts will search out the scams and do the monitoring legwork for you.
Our friends at the National Association of REALTORS® have produced this five minute video to show members just how easy it is to reduce the risk to your listings. Five minutes is all you need to learn tips and tricks that might save you hours of headaches.
Grab a fresh cup coffee and click the video. It’s time to get serious about learning the easy steps you can take to curtail the chances of a disaster befalling you and your clients.
Northwest Iowa REALTORS® are warning residents about two scams taking place in the real estate industry.
“Recently we’ve seen an increase across the country in e-mail phishing attacks on both REALTORS® and their clients,” said Kelly Burge, CEO of the Northwest Iowa Regional Board of REALTORS®. “Hackers are surreptitiously logging into the e-mails of REALTORS® and their clients, and waiting patiently for the right moment. When it’s time to wire funds for the closure of a sale, a fraudulent e-mail is being sent by the hacker to the buyer with phony wiring instructions. The e-mail looks very legitimate and appears to have come from the agent or the closing company, but it includes instructions that result in the wired funds being sent to the hacker rather than the account to close the real estate transaction. This is resulting in the theft of significant funds from legitimate, hard-working buyers across the nation.”
Burge says it’s important for both REALTORS® and their clients to be vigilant. “Our members are aware of this issue, and they’re alerting all their clients,” she says. “Members of the home buying public need to know that if they receive wiring instructions via e-mail, they need to pick up the phone and place a call to their agent and their closing company to make sure the message is legitimate.”
Hackers are so crafty as to even change the phone number on the phony e-mail, Burge said. “Make sure that when you’re placing that call, you’re doing so to the phone number of record for the company. Don’t use a phone number from the e-mail, because hackers can redirect your call with relative ease. Be sure to look up the number yourself online or in a phone book.”
In addition to the wiring fraud, REALTORS® continue to see a second scam in the region, this time involving rental properties.
“We continue to see REALTOR® member listings being stolen by scammers and published on sites like Craigslist,” said Burge. In these cases, scammers steal legitimate photos from real estate websites like realtor.com® and post them as though the property is available to rent.
Scammers will typically make up a plausible story that requires the consumer to wire or mail money without ever meeting in person. The problem generally only comes to light when a party tries to move in and discovers the property was never truly available for rent in the first place.
Members of the public are reminded to adhere to the old adage, “If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.” When a for sale sign is in the yard, it’s best to call the company directly to inquire about the availability of a property for rent, even if it’s listed on a rental website.
Signs of a rental scam often include a request to wire money without meeting an owner or property superintendent, and no access to view the property in advance of wiring funds. A real estate sign in the yard indicating the property is for sale should also prompt a consumer to conduct an additional investigation when looking to secure a rental.
Members of the public with questions are encouraged to contact a REALTOR® member in their area. The Northwest Iowa Regional Board of REALTORS® is one of the largest real estate associations in the state of Iowa and serves residents in a 13 county region.

More than 40 Realtors from around northwest Iowa traveled to Des Moines on Wednesday, March 2 as part of the Iowa Association of Realtors annual Legislative Bus-In Day event.
After an update on statewide issues facing today’s property owners, over 300 Realtor members descended en masse upon the Iowa capitol to visit with local legislators. Our NWIA delegation spent the afternoon meeting with Senators Bill Anderson and Rick Bertrand, and Representatives Chris Hall, Ron Jorgensen, and Chuck Holz.
“Participating in legislative and legal matters is an important part of the Realtor profession,” said Kelly Burge, Executive Officer for the Northwest Iowa Regional Board of Realtors. “Realtors are the defenders of homeownership and take their obligation to protect private property rights very seriously.”
Realtors from around the area make the trip to Des Moines annually for the Legislative Bus-In Day event. “While we do attend legislative update events and see our local lawmakers at home, the fact that our Realtor members believe so strongly in issues that we are willing to take a day to travel to see these folks at work in Des Moines makes a large impact,” said Burge.
Among the items discussed were legislation creating home savings accounts, carbon monoxide detector regulation and rental property regulations. Area Realtors will have their next opportunity to participate in the event in March, 2017.
The Northwest Iowa Regional Board of Realtors encompasses nearly 500 real estate professionals in a 13 county region across the northwest quadrant of Iowa.
NWIA REALTOR® member Keith Howard of Dakota Dunes Realty, LLC is in an ongoing battle with pancreatic cancer. He is currently taking treatments in both Sioux City and at the Mayo Clinic.
With 32 years in the business, Keith has always been a giver; he was recognized by IAR with the Good Neighbor Award in 2014.
A benefit pancake breakfast is being planned for Friday, April 1. The event will be held at the Home Builders Association of Siouxland, 3900 Stadium Drive, Sioux City.
In addition to the meal, silent auction items are also being accepted from fellow REALTORS® or real estate offices in support of Keith. Contact Tim Swanson at 712.253.9117 or [email protected] to make a donation to the auction.
An account has also been established at Security National Bank for financial donations. Checks payable to the Keith Howard Benefit Fund can be dropped off at any bank location.
Watch for further details on this event coming soon, and plan to be there on April 1 to support one of our own from the REALTOR® family
Our March board lunch just happens to fall on St. Patrick’s Day and we plan to celebrate in style! Join us at Noon on Thursday, March 17 at Bev’s on the River for a great meal and some Irish fun.
All members who are wearin’ o’ the green will be invited to drop a business card into a drawing for a $20 gift card to McCarthy & Bailey’s Irish Pub. All members NOT wearin’ o’ the green will get pinched by the NWIA staff. (Joking, folks. Okay, probably joking. Or not.)
Our speaker for the event will be KCAU ABC9 TV Chief Meteorologist Fred Hexom.
And that’s no blarney.
