One of the best things about being a REALTOR®? Well, there are lots of things, but one of the biggest perks of the job has to be getting the chance to love and give back to the communities where we work and the places we call home.
At NWIA, we got to have some fun on Tuesday, July 5 doing that very thing, and can we just say, giving back feels so good!
Thanks to a $1000 gift from our Board of Directors, and a generous matching grant from the REALTOR® Foundation of Iowa, we were able to present a check for $2,000 to the Sioux City Children’s Museum/Launching Pad. Funds will be used to support the ongoing operations of the Museum, and enhance experiences for children and families who visit.
We’re very thankful to have the support and backing of the REALTOR® Foundation of Iowa (RFI) on our side for worthy endeavors like this one. The volunteers who serve on the RFI board work hard, and every year they make a significant amount of donations to worthy projects that enhance communities all across our state.
If you haven’t been to the Launching Pad, it’s a very fun place to visit. Plan a trip with your kids, grandkids, niece, nephew—- or heck, borrow a kid from a friend or neighbor if you have to. Just go, and you might even find yourself unleashing your inner child too. You’ll be glad you checked it out, trust us.
Participating in the presentation were Kyle Kelly, Century 21 ProLink, past NWIA president and current member of the Board of Directors at the Children’s Museum; Kelly Burge, Executive Officer NWIA; Bob Fitch, Executive Director of the Children’s Museum; Sue Raby-Struthers, Century 21 ProLink and RFI member; Kathy Miller, Coldwell Banker Premier Realty Group and RFI member; and Kevin Archer, Keller Williams Siouxland and current President of NWIA.
At NWIA, we are proud to be REALTORS®, who support and give back to the communities where we live and work!
Time flies when you’re having fun, and yes, it’s hard to believe that July is already here, isn’t it? Summer seems to always go just a little faster than the other seasons. NWIA was pleased to welcome aboard six new faces to our organization in the month of June. Please take time to greet these individuals, and do your best to help acquaint them with our NWIA organization and their new profession as REALTOR® members.
On behalf of everyone at NWIA, we extend a hearty welcome, and look forward to seeing these new faces as our board events kick back into full swing this fall.

The Northwest Iowa Regional Board of REALTORS® (NWIA) is accepting nominations from members with an interest in serving on the Board of Directors. Members may nominate themselves or another member.
Eight seats on the board are available in this coming September’s election. Those elected will commence their service in October, 2016. Positions will have staggered terms of one, two, and three years.
Who Can Serve On The Board of Directors? This is spelled out in our bylaws. In this election, the following members are eligible to run for the open positions.
- Three seats must be filled by NWIA members who are Broker/Owners. This means the individual must possess a Broker’s license and hold some ownership in the company in which they work.
- Five seats are available for Sales Agents. NWIA membership in good standing and an active real estate license are required to fill these vacancies.
- For all eight seats, candidates must be a current member of NWIA and have been a REALTOR® member (of any local board or combination of boards) for a minimum of five years.
- No more than two REALTORS® from the same real estate firm may simultaneously serve on the Board of Directors.
Given our ability to leverage technology to minimize travel through the use of online meetings, NWIA strongly encourages members from outside of Sioux City to apply for the available board seats. Voices from outside the Sioux City metro area are especially needed to help us continue our quest to become the strongest REALTOR® association in the state of Iowa.
What Do Board Members Actually Do? Those elected to serve on the board act as the guiding compass for the organization, overseeing all aspects of the board’s policies and finances. The directors work in tandem with the CEO to make important decisions that impact the long-term strength and health of the NWIA. Sometimes directors help recruit members to support a cause, respond to a call for action or even do silly things like take pies to the face in the name of RPAC fundraising. It’s all in a day’s work when you sign on to serve as a director!
What’s Required of Board of Director Members? In a nutshell, regular attendance, a commitment of time to review and analyze complex data in advance of meetings, the ability to think big-picture, long-term, and make decisions that can be tough or unpopular. Directors need to be able to positively represent their fellow NWIA members at events, and have time to provide visible support and leadership to all board endeavors.
There’s no question it’s a commitment to serve, but it’s one we believe is valuable to each member who decides to jump in. There’s no better way to learn about your profession and the REALTOR® organization than in a seat at the director’s table.
How Much Time Does It Take To Be A Director? That’s hard to say, but those considering a run for the board should plan for at least a couple of hours each month.
Since our merger and geographic growth, NWIA has implemented a system which allows many director meetings to be held online, minimizing the need for board members to travel. However, there will be times when in-person meetings will be necessary, estimated to be four to six annually. When needed, these face-to-face meetings will be held in Sioux City, and in conjunction with other board events when practical.
Why Is It Such A Big Commitment To Be A Director? Regular attendance at board meetings, whether online or in person, is required of board members. Those who fail to attend meetings on a regular basis can be terminated from their volunteer role.
Additionally, members elected to serve as a director of NWIA must attend at least two state or national events each year, both to grow their knowledge of the REALTOR® organization and to represent their colleagues from NWIA. These may include state meetings held in Iowa such as the annual state convention, annual Legislative Bus-In Day, summer meetings or winter meetings. National meetings, such as the NAR Mid-Year lobbying event in Washington, D.C or the annual NAR convention would also satisfy this requirement. This travel is generally at the member’s expense.
Furthermore, those interested in running for a seat on the Board of Directors must demonstrate good faith in supporting RPAC and other board, state, and national causes.
Please keep the lofty expectations of acceptable board meeting attendance, time commitment to attend events, and demonstrable organizational support in mind as you consider applying for available roles.
I’m Interested! How Do I Apply? Simply contact Kelly Burge at the board office via phone or email and say you’d like to be considered! Members may either nominate themselves or another member they believe would be a good addition to the board leadership. Our Nominating Committee will hold a short interview process with each individual, and names of those approved will be placed on the ballot for consideration by the membership.
Election of board members will take place this coming September, with terms beginning in October.
Got Questions? Need more information or want to understand the specifics of the role in greater depth? Contact NWIA CEO Kelly Burge at the board office, (712) 255-8810. We’re always happy to help you understand more about your NWIA board and how to get involved!
It’s always exciting when we have new faces join our merry troupe of dedicated real estate professionals. Please join us in welcoming the following new members, who joined the NWIA organization during the month of May. Click on the agent name to be taken to their contact information on our board website.

With a competitive race for the Republican nomination in U.S. House District 4, we are pleased to have secured Rick Bertrand, Republican candidate for U.S. House District 4, as our special guest speaker for the board’s May luncheon event.
We were happy to have had the opportunity to host Mr. Bertrand’s competitor at our board luncheon event in April.
The board is pleased to provide these opportunities allowing members to become more educated about the two candidates involved in the June 7 primary election.
All members are encouraged to attend.
Please note, this will be our final board luncheon event before we take a break for the summer months of June, July and August. Regular lunch meetings will resume again in September.
Early in 2016, the REALTOR ® Foundation of Iowa allowed 6th and 7th grade teachers in school districts across the state to apply for $250 grants to be used by students in their classrooms in a way that “paid it forward” to others.
NWIA was pleased to assist teachers in Spirit Lake and Sioux Center with their applications. Also receiving grants in IAR Region 1 were classrooms in Cherokee and Sioux Rapids. In total, 14 educators in IAR Region 1 received grants to use with their students, with 135 total classrooms across the state receiving grants.
Six classrooms in Sioux Rapids each received a $250 grant. Students made decisions about how to spend their money, with some choosing to make donations to other organizations, and some opting to find a way to turn their grant dollars into more cash with which to make an impact. Read the online story from NorthwestIowa.com.
The Promise Community Heath Center was one of the organizations impacted by the Sioux Center student’s gifts. Read their story here.
In Spirit Lake, 6th grade students from Annette Kalkoff’s class made and delivered May baskets to area nursing homes and fire stations. Several other classroom award winners will complete their projects before the end of the school year.
Originating in the Quad Cities area in memory of Jack Lindaman, Project Jack gives junior high aged students the opportunity to do good in their community in any way the class chooses.
About The Program
Jack Lindaman was born on the 4th of July and was affectionately called a little firecracker. Jack and his family enjoyed fireworks and all the festivities around the Fourth of July. He liked to make people happy and was always a positive light to those around him despite his health issues. Jack passed away in February 2010 from spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). According to curesma.org, “SMA is a disease that robs people of physical strength by affecting the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord, taking away the ability to walk, eat, or breathe. It is the number one genetic cause of death for infants.”
Jack Lindaman was just 6 years old when he passed away. Through the creation of Project Jack, his memory and loving spirit will continue on through the good deeds of children. The REALTOR® Foundation of Iowa is pleased to have created a fund to help students across Iowa to participate in Project Jack.
The first project was carried out with each person in Jack’s class at Alan Shepard Elementary School receiving $100 to “pay it forward”. There were not any stipulations given or rules to follow on how to use the money. Projects ranged from donations to charitable organizations to passing out roses to strangers.
Please join us in welcoming the following new members who joined the Northwest Iowa Regional Board of REALTORS® in the month of April . We’re pleased to have you as a part of our REALTOR® family! Please also note this month we have one name change for a member and one name change for an office.
